INTERNATIONAL COCHIN DAY 2011
Dear Cochin Friends,

Gerrit and I have already started the preparations of the seventh Cochin Day. It will be on the 10th of September, again at the “dorpshuis” in the village of Zeddam. The winners of the day will receive a Cochin Day rosette and an amount of money. This year we have a very nice portrait, painted specially for this day by Gianfranco Montevani from Italy. There will be many more prizes to win, like a prize for the best four male birds from one breeder and many many others.
This year we will also have some experienced breeders judging the birds. The Cochins will be judged by Frank Klatt, Obmann of the German Cochin and Brahma club. There will be a big sale, where hopefully people can buy birds. This way, our breeds will go all over Europe.
As every year, Rikie Bosch will organize the meal for all visitors. Cups and other prizes will be handed out at around 4 o’clock in the afternoon. We hope many of you will come to this cozy, international Cochin meeting. If you are looking for birds this is the place to make contacts and perhaps buy some. The papers for entry will be available at my address beginning with the end of July/ beginning of August.

If anybody is interested we could set up a facebook group to keep up to date on achievements with the mottle improvement project.

Male and female plumage: Glossy beetle green black ground colour with pure white mottling at feather ends, to be evenly distributed throughout the fowl, except in the primaries and foot feathering where more irregular white areas are acceptable, though fowl with less or little white in these areas should be considered superior examples. The mottling becomes gayer (profusely mottled) in the fowls second and subsequent seasons, however this should not be considered a serious fault, as the even spread of mottling should take precedence.

In both sexes: Beak and feet Rich yellow. Horn and lizard to be
permissible respectively. Eyes red. Comb face, ear lobes bright red.

Scale of points: As per other cochin colours, as these give the majority of points to Type and size (30/100) and Colour and plumage (25/100) allowing for a well mottled bird with little white in its extremities (footings and primaries) to be marked much higher a poorly mottled bird with excessively white extremities.

The Cochin Club Regional Show attracted 36 entries this year. – compared to the 20 entries last year, this made for a very competitive and interesting event.

Special thanks go out to the DFES Committee, and to Show Managers Derek Wakeham, Alan Thomas and Malcolm Winson who put in a superhuman effort organising and managing the Show, with Malcolm and Kay Winson also filling the role of Show Secretary.

Second: R.Jones. Good type but too much smutt

White Cockerel: None forward

White Pullet: None Forward

There are more good whites out there, hopefully there will be more entries in 2011

Black Cock: First . C,Sutton Good type and feet, questionable wings

First: L.Judge Good Colour feet and wings, weak head

Second : C&T Habberfield. Fair head and type smaller and white in foot feather

Black Pullet:

First: C&T Habberfield good type and width, good feet, head just ok

Second: R.Jones: fit well prepared not as big as winner

Fifth : R.Jones, nice head , fit and colour, but greenish feet.

Sixth : A.N.Lockhart: Coorect colour and type too young

Overall the quality was not as high as in previous years. There was evidence of outcrossing with some birds showing other breed characteristics.

Blue Cock :

First: A.N.Lockhart : Good width colour and feet, weak comb

Blue Hen

First: A.NLockhart: Good feet and wings, top colour uneven

Blue Cockerel:

First: C.Sutton Best Blue good type, colour and foot feather pale feet

Second: C.Sutton, Good feet and wings, very dark eye

Third: A.N.Lockhart: Correct colour, too young

Breeders need to select against split wings which was quite prevalent and select for even colour free of brassiness. This section was of higher quality than the blacks.

Cuckoo Cock ;

First . C.Sutton Fit and correct size. Too much white in wings and undercolour

Cuckoo Hen:

First: D&G Osborne. Best Cuckoo good type feet and wings , dark markings

Second: C.Sutton. Good feet and tail, too dark

Second: R.Jones , Good type not so well marked

Third : R.Benson, good type and colour weak head and neck moult

This was a very mixed batch. The colour must not be too dark and thigh fluff needs to be clearly marked. Size and type in the winners was good

Partridge Cock:

None Forward

Partridge Hen:

First: R.Cherry Good size and type weak thigh pencilling

Partridge Cockerel:

First : EW & D Jones. Best Partridge and Best Opposite Sex. Correct markings with lemon hackles, good size and type, white in foot feather and wings

Second: R.Cherry. Good head and colour , weak front and feet

Partridge Pullet

First: R.Cherry Good colour and hackle, could be bigger

Second: EW & D Jones Correct Type and lacing, patchy top colour

Third R.Benson , Well prepared but too silver in colour

The winning cockerel was a cracker with the correct lemon hackles. We need to see more of his ilk. Breeders need to concentrate on increasing the size without losing the quality of lacing.

Non Standard Male or Female:

Second: R.Jones. Black female. Well prepared and good feet. Small

Third: D&G Osborne: Black pale feet, white in ear lobe not as well prepared as first two

Fourth: D&G Osborne: Black Mottle female good markings, missing toe nail, pale feet

Fifth: D&G Osborne: White female, white feet and legs poor fitness

Sixth: D& G Osborne: Cuckoo Male: Too dark pale/white feet

Seventh: D&G Osborne : Mottle Male, too much white uneven markings poor preparation

Lack of type was very evident as well as some poorly prepared birds in this section.

OVERALL COMMENTS:

Champion: R.Betts- Buff Hen

Reserve Champion: E.Oliver

Best Opposite Sex: EW& D Jones

Three excellent examples of the breed and respective colours and shown to perfection.

All exhibiters must be congratulated on producing such an excellent turnout at the club show and commiserations to those exhibitors who were snow bound. Thank you very much for the honour of judging the club show. As a breed we must continue to concentrate on breed type and quality first and foremost. Remember type is the breed and colour the variety. Colour is easier to breed for so select your breeders on type first and colour second. Hopefully club members found the workshops helpful at both the National and Stafford. The intention will be to continue with these next year.

Keeping and preparing Cochins for exhibition is a challenge and all exhibitors need to be congratulated in such a difficult season. It was also very encouraging to see so many less well known exhibitors amongst the prize cards. This is great news for the future security of the breed. Well done.

A special mention must be given to Russel Jones who won reserve overall Supreme Champion with a Stienbaker goose. Many congratulations. This is the second time a club member has reached high honours as Richard Betts won supreme with a Buff Orpington a few years ago.

Come guys now we must do this with a Cochin. Happy Breeding in 2011.
